Triceratops

Description: Vegetarian, lived 70 million years ago during latest cretaceous in North America

Belonging Order: Diapsid, Ornitischia, Ceratopsidae

Period: Cretaceous, about 70-65 million years ago

Distribution: North America

Length: about 9 meters

Height: about 3 meters

Weight: about 8 tons

Physical Characteristics: Four-footed, it belonged to the “horned dinosaurs” species in cretaceous. The most distinctive feature is their large skull, among the largest of all land animals. It bore a single horn on the snout, above the nostrils, and a pair of horns approximately 1 m long, with one above each eye. It also had a robust collar made of bones on its neck.

Food: Vegetarian

Extended Description: The function of its horns and collar are not clear: beside the defense function against predators, they probably had a role in the social behaviors as well. Maybe the collar was needed in order to support the strong muscles of its jawbones.

It seems that for these species males looked very different from females in many morphological features.
